PRENZLAUER BERG Goldsmiths & Designers

Prenzlauer Berg is a trend setting part of Berlin that has many well known goldsmiths and jewellery designers. One of the first known goldsmiths to settle in the area was Goldschmiede Müller & Söhne in the Prenzlauer Allee (formally known as the Prenzlauer Chaussee) from 1825 until the Franco-German war of 1870-1871. Another goldsmith was Goldschmiede Alfred Büchholz in the Tresckowstrasse today known as the Knaackstrasse. The unique relationship between a creative art form and that of a well defined craft is something that embodies the work of a goldsmith. There are 42 top goldsmiths and jewellery design studios in Prenzlauer Berg today with a total of 237 in Berlin. One of the best areas to view the work of master goldsmiths and designers is around the Kollwitzplatz and in the Kollwitzstrasse. Penzlauer Berg is also home to several famous goldsmiths most notably the internationally known and award winning goldsmith designer Claudia Baetge who is winner of many international prizes and awards from as far a field as Japan to Australia and England to the U.S.A. Her jewellery-art creations have been shown on the catwalks of Paris and have been worn by the stars at the Oskar prize night at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles. Her studio showroom can be found at the Kollwitzstrasse 44 and is frequented by politicians and many creative or prominent people. Many goldsmiths and jewellery designers of Prenzlauer Berg have a long tradition with their art form such as Bettina Bissinger who's great grandfather and company C. Bissinger & Söhne worked with Faberge on the Faberge-Egg for the royal Hohenzollern.

The different fields of jewellery design and working directions of the Prenzlauer Berg goldsmiths varies greatly as so does the large variety of materials and techniques they use. From the very flamboyant look to the avant-garde, from the creation of experimental wearable jewellery art pieces right up to a classic look and a more defined approach. Prenzlauer Berg goldsmiths and jewellery designers work with materials such as diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds and opals including all the precious metals like gold, platinum, palladium white gold and many others. Some younger jewellery designers or silversmiths tend to experiment more with silver, plastics, amber, wood even found objects. The fundamental principals and underlying aesthetics that the goldsmiths commonly use are all based on the Elements of Design such as: line, tone, texture, direction, colour, emphasis, rhythm, unity and so on.

Prenzlauer Berg is also home to several master watchmakers and craftspeople. Once a dying profession with the advent of the Astron-35SQ liquid quartz crystal wrist-watch by Seiko in 1969, the art of the watchmaker is now making a strong come back in Prenzlauer Berg. Master watchmakers can be found especially in the Schoenhauser Allee, Greifswalderstrasse and Danzigerstrasse streets.
